Entrepreneurs and artists alike create something new, responding to a need they see in the world. In both art practice and business practice, we are coming up with creative solutions, expertly executing them, and sharing them with our communities.
This panel convenes 4 artists who support their creative practice through entrepreneurial means, as independent business owners and/or creative freelancers. We invite a group discussion around art practice and entrepreneurship, asking what different shapes our artistic careers might take, and how we leverage our skills as artists to make an impact or fill a need outside the studio.

About stARTup Art Fair
The art world is changing, and many working artists are finding themselves without a space to present their work. The core mission of stARTup Art Fair is to provide an exhibition venue for independent artists who are seeking to engage with art enthusiasts in a welcoming and interactive environment. Co-founded in 2015 by artist Ray Beldner, stARTup Art Fair gives independent artists access to the type of art world professionals and press usually reserved for traditional art fairs. The fair’s unique structure provides a marketplace that gives the artist the power to present and sell work on their own terms, allowing artists to keep 100% of their sales proceeds.
KIO GRIFFITH is an interdisciplinary artist, curator and editor producing diverse trajectory projects between the U.S. and Japan. His work includes drawing, painting, sound, video, performance, electronics, language, sculpture and installation. He has exhibited in Europe, Asia and the U.S.A. and has performed, collaborated or curated various musicians and contemporary artists, dancers and designers in galleries, museums, clubs and alternative spaces, locally and internationally. His current projects include project director at TYPE (Tokyo+Yokohama Projects Exchange), curator and development director at ARTRA, associate editor at Fabrik and Art Bridge (Tokyo), art director at Angel City Jazz Festival and has designed over 300 album jackets. Griffith has recently exhibited at the 2016 Aichi Trienniale in Nagoya, Japan.

STEPHANIE DIAMOND's work ensures that humans take care of themselves as individuals within a public. Her projects explore self care, personal practice and individual awareness as a catalyst for being of service to communities. She employs art as a vehicle to bridge gaps and provide access to places and people that would otherwise never come together. Her Listings Project, a free weekly email of real estate and opportunities listings focused on creative people, has become a staple within our community. Her select exhibitions include: MoMA, MASS MoCA, MoMA/P.S. 1, Studio Museum in Harlem, Queens Museum of Art, Bronx Museum of the Arts, Project Row Houses, and Contemporary Art Center (Vilnius, Lithuania).

KRISTINE SCHOMAKER is an Art Historian and multidisciplinary artist living and working at the Brewery artist complex in Los Angeles, California. She earned her BA in Art History and MA in Studio Art from California State University at Northridge where she studied under Betty Ann Brown and Samantha Fields. In 2014 Kristine founded Shoebox PR aimed at helping artists gain a presence in the art world. It has grown to a company with 3 team members and now represents galleries and art events while also representing individual artists. Kristine is also the editor of Art and Cake a contemporary L.A. Art magazine reviewing shows, interviewing art influencers and covering art world events that will impact how the Los Angeles art scene will be remembered. Kristine has taught art history at Antelope Valley College and Pasadena City College, formed an artist collective in Los Angeles and has organized and curated numerous art exhibitions throughout Southern California. For three years, Kristine was the President, social media, advertising and marketing manager of the Brewery Artwalk Association.

ALLISON WYPER is an interdisciplinary performance artist (performing at the stARTup Art Fair opening party!) and founder of Rhizomatic Arts, a one-woman operation that provides professional services, training, and community for independent artists and creatives. Rhizomatic Arts takes a holistic approach to creative sustainability, supporting the cultural eco-system on a grassroots, person-to-person level, empowering artists to take charge of their own careers within a supportive network of peers. Our Artist Sustainability Network connects creatives with skills and resources to share, via intimate community-building events and a mutually-supportive gift economy. Our motto is "work independently, not alone." Allison also works part time as the Artists Knowledge Manager for the Center for Cultural Innovation, managing grant, incubation, and professional development programs for independent artists.
