Artist Spotlight #10: NEHARA KALEV

Rhizomatic Arts is proud to feature members of our Sustainability Network who are doing good in their communities through their creative and professional practice. NEHARA KALEV is a choreographer and performer, and the director of glowbox, a movement and aerial arts studio and gathering space by the beach in Santa Monica.

Tell us a little about your creative practice. What do you do in the world?

Dance and acrobatics captured me at age 4 and never let me go. While creating, performing, teaching, collaborating, and engaging with this moment, I am secretly playing with its shifting grip.  Dancing for years on tour with people and companies I hold close to my heart allowed me to find my own creative home.  I found Rachel Rosenthal.  She invited me to leap into the well.  Rachel continues to have a profound effect on what I do in the world and keeps issuing outlandish dares.

Tell us about the glowbox. How does it serve your community?  How might network members get involved, and use it as a resource?

Moved to give others a place and space to dive in to the invisible, I open my live/work studio to you. "Oh Wow, I looove your space!" often pours out before the second sandal is unbuckled at the door. glowbox is warm, intimate and inviting. It literally glows. I feel compelled to share this resource and build a more connected community, build momentum, and grow our collective daring. Maybe together we can discover a new tackle or a new embrace that goes directly to the heart of the giant in the room.  Let’s see.

What would a sustainable career look like for you?

It sometimes amazes me that I’ve sustained an ongoing artistic career.  I made decisions that probably came via Planet Crazypants.  There is always this delicate balance that needs tending in order to support a lifestyle of artistic engagement and service.  In this moment I am most interested in finding ways to develop more rapidly and expand my reach.  How about a sustainability that also thrives?  There’s boldness in that thought.

What's coming up next in Nehara land?

There’s an asymmetrical ladder that keeps haunting me, as well as a tangle of ropes and sticks . . . performance pieces in progress.  Regarding glowbox, I am in the brainstorming phase of two proposals that make me smile.  One is a mentorship program, and one is an international exchange of collaborating artists.  Let’s talk.

I am also hosting an aerial yoga teacher training intensive March 30-April 2, and a Sustainability Network Hang Out on March 5th!
