Artist Spotlight #13: KARINE FLEURIMA

We're spotlighting artists in our Sustainability Network who are contributing to a better world and more sustainable practice for their peers. For "Avant-Electro-Soul-Singer-Performance Artist" KARINE FLEURIMA, "silence is just as important as good music. Art is a form of meditation and meditation is an act of resistance."

Hi Karine! Tell us a little about what do you do in the world.

As a creative practice, I have created immersive environments using manipulated video loops, beats and African vocalizations.

How does "collaboration" manifest in your creative process?

Collaboration is so important to my process. I have collaborated with photographers, make up artists, stylists, set designers, sound engineers and videographers. Each person brought their own creative energy to the table and it helped to shape all of my pieces.

In the same vein, I think it's a really exciting time to be in LA. The arts scene is alive here and folks are approachable. I am looking forward to meeting new creatives to collaborate with!

What would a sustainable career look like for you?

What a great question! To me, it's the ability to balance time working on projects while financially providing for myself by doing what I love to do (DJing, performance, etc...).

Meditation has been helping me immensely and has allowed me to find more spaciousness in my life. To me, silence is just as important as good music. Art is a form of meditation and meditation is an act of resistance.

How do you see your field changing over the next 10 years?

I think performance will continue to incorporate interactive elements. It's very inspiring to see Afrofuturism coming into more art spheres and it's something I want to see more of. I hope to continue my work in this vein to contribute my voice to the chorus.

What's coming up next for you?

I am working on a larger scale performance project. Right now, I am looking for the right space in LA to develop the work. This piece will be closer to an opera in structure. This winter I'll be releasing my first guided meditation which is based off of the ones that I led at the Women's Center for Creative Work this past year. The healing arts is becoming an important part of my creative process and I am looking forward to sharing some healing sounds with the world.
